Shielding, Insulator, Gasket and Spacer Introduction

Definitions

Shield: a screen printed or metalized flexible material that is used for protecting from EMI radiation or ESD punch through to vital electronic circuitry and components.

Insulator: a flexible or semi-rigid dielectric material used to protect two or more surfaces from making electrical contact. Also there are some insulating materials used for preventing heat transfer between two components.

Gasket: a flexible material either used for energy absorption or preventing ingress of liquids.

Spacer: a flexible or rigid material used to allow two separate surfaces to mate together. Used also in a membrane switch to trap metal snap domes, provide the correct distance between the circuit layers and hold the layers together.
